Thank You Notes

I believe in Thank You notes.

Like good-old, hand-written notes. In the mail.

As wedding presents start rolling in, I’ve been busy getting my notes in the mail. Usually the next day. I’m like a Thank You note Ninja.

I initially toyed with ideas like this:

So, so cute.

But in order to do something cute at the wedding for your cards you have to wait until the wedding (clearly) and that would kill me dead. Besides, using cards I already have is greener, right? Because I’m not buying new cards? Or… yeah?

My promptness with Thank You notes is something of a family joke. I was always showing up my cousins with my speedy appreciation of Christmas gifts. You guys spend Christmas Day playing with new toys? I spend it addressing mail to my nearest and dearest. BOOM.

No apologies, kids. Promptness is a virtue.

Here’s my secret: When I was about 12, someone told me that Princess Diana always sent Thank You notes the day after she received gifts. In fact, sometimes she sent notes the same day. Wow. I mean, Princess Di was my idol once Shirley Temple’s relative greatness began to fade, so clearly, this was a habit to emulate.

It may be total bollocks. I don’t know a single person who has once met Princess Di or to whom she would have shared her correspondence schedule but no matter – I’ve been a speedy thanker every since.

I can attest to this, having gotten my own Thank You from Helena this week. After she got our gift Monday.

I mean, we sent prompt thank yous, but not THAT prompt. :)

I love that! Sending thank you notes promptly was drilled into my head as a kid and now it irks me to no end when I’m out of cards or stamps and need to send one. I’ve already started thinking about monogrammed cards for when my wedding rolls around because I agree, the picture ones take way too long to get back from the photographer/printer.

Years ago on some talk show, Oprah or GMA or Today, one of the guests was a former secretary of Jackie Kennedy. This woman talked about her habit of sending thank you notes. The former first lady also was an avid thank you note writer and insisted on writing thank you notes herself and not having a staffer handle the duty.
