Home Candy: Office Organization

Working from home has me thinking about the best ways to organize an office. Currently, I have a bulletin board to hang all my small reminders (the items that aren’t filed in colored folders in my filing cabinet) and a basket to hold small notebooks. Once I add a few more touches, I will share the final product with you.

For now, let’s look at other inspirational offices.

I love these covered clipboards from Wren Design. Clipboards wrapped in fun paper and covered with clear varnish. Simple and pretty.

These yellow baskets make me happy for many reasons. One, who doesn’t love a pop of yellow? Second, I love that they are making something structural (a column) into something functional as well (menu storage!). Third, Daniel Ting Chong’s images from Dear Me Brasserie show that you can get office inspiration anywhere.

I also love this idea from Sunshine of Mine: using colored masking tape to mark off a section of your wall for an inspiration board. It’s a clever way to make an assortment of images look more orderly. Also, you could use washi tape to add fun patterns or colors.

Working with numbers rather than images means that I don’t have quite the collection of small scraps and pictures in my office, but everyone needs some visual inspiration close at hand.

Anyone else have a home office?

  1. I don’t really like the taped-off look … bulletin boards are not that expensive really and cleaner than peeling masking tape and scotch tape and whatnot.

What about magnetic chalkboard paint? You could put a huge empty frame on the wall, paint inside it, use magnets to hang things and chalk to make lists or doodle as you wished.

    • I just looked it up and should note that I didn’t realize how expensive that paint is… could still be fun but perhaps not as cost-effective as I imagined :)

    • I like that tape thing, but it’s kind of something that applies more to someone in a visual field. Accountants don’t have much image inspiration they require close at hand. :-)

  2. I’m a home office girl!

On the wall in front of my desk, I have a bulletin board with all of my passwords and production codes tacked to it. I also have an absurd number of cat postcards from around the world, and the best motivational note I’ve ever received from a boss.

I also keep a work-stuff-only calendar in here, and I have a few framed pieces of art. My bookshelf and windowsill chip in and hold all my finished books, printed out manuscripts, printer, and various Piles of Nonsense I seem to acquire while going about my job.

  3. I actually like the taped off look, its a subtle nod to a bulletin board without actually having to commit to a new fabric pattern or cheesy cork. You should put up accounting pun art.

  4. Helena,

I loved this post! I hope that maybe you’ll include some of our yummy finds in your office sometime as well.

    Best wishes,
