Sleeping Arrangements

One of the reasons Will and I upgraded to a larger bed was to have more room for the cats.

There are two distinct zones in which the cats like to rest for the night: The Valley and The Perch.

There are distinct advantages to each location. The Valley provides better access to cuddles, The Perch allows you to align your little cat-body with the window and spy on the neighbors all night.

Historically, Nibbler was a Valley Cat and Odie a Perch Cat. Lately, though, Odie has discovered the pleasures of sleeping in The Valley, and this has thrown Nibbler off course. Rather than take The Perch, she opts to brood on the couch all night.

Nibbler is, to her credit, a much better resident of The Valley as she sleeps in a lady-like ball:

Odie likes to play a game where he sees how much space he can occupy:

He’s evil, but it’s cute.

Do your pets sleep in bed with you? I know the thought of sharing sleep space with animals is not everyone’s cup of tea.

  1. I am sadly without pets these days *sniff, tear, sob*

But back in the day, Domino slept in his bed, which was on the floor next to mine. And I discovered that you could persuade him that, no, he didn’t need to go outside at 5am if you let him on the bed. Because he’d go back to sleep for like three hours if you did that, which meant I didn’t have to get up at stupid o’clock. WIN.

He liked to alternate between sleeping curled up in the small of my back (very inconvenient for turning over) and sprawling across half the bed. When he did the latter, he would periodically stretch in such a way that he tried to push me out of bed.

You wouldn’t think a 10kg cocker spaniel would be able to push a fully grown person out of bed. But he sure gave it his best shot!!

  2. Oh. And on one very memorable occasion, I woke up to find that he’d CRAWLED UNDER THE COVERS AND WAS ASLEEP WITH HIS HEAD ON MY PILLOW. I was not impressed…

  3. At any given moment we have three cats on the bed, in a basket by the bed, or on a blanket near the basket! I want a king size bed… they get along better with more space.

  4. This could easily be our bed.

Our bed is against the the wall, and Lowell is either between me and the wall (so our faces can touch), between me and Kyle (so he can spread out and touch us both), or on the outside of the bed (freaking Kyle out so he wakes up and feeds them).

Halifax, like Nibbler, is a much more considerate sleeper. She usually takes up residence on the top third of my pillow, the very foot of the bed, or the recliner in our bedroom, so she can see us without having to participate in struggle for real estate.

I’m so looking forward to getting our new bed this month!

  5. We’ve always not allowed the dog to sleep with us. The thought of my dog sleeping on my pillow grosses me out. And she doesn’t even shed!

Our dog is allowed on the bed when we tell her she can. Super cute actually – we got rid of our super high bed and are waiting on the frame, and she still puts her front paws up on the bed “asking permission” even though she can easily jump up there!

We do have nights of “aww, she’s so cute” or “it’s too cold for her house!” and let her stay. But she’s only allowed on top – never on the pillows or sheets.

Also, once that 15 lb shih tzu starts pushing you off the bed (amazingly!) it’s time to go back to your own bed little one!!

That, and I like to cuddle too much to Val to have anything in between! :D
